Jenks Chamber hosts Groundbreaking for New Pickleball Complex

Posted on: May 19th, 2023 by Chris Lilly No Comments

In the world of sports, it’s the hottest thing since sliced bread, make that sliced pickles. It’s a sport with a name that sounds like something fermenting in a jar on a deli counter, pickleball.

“Somewhere between ping pong and tennis,” said Dr. Angelo Cuzalina.

Cuzalina was so taken by it that he and his partners aptly named the company In a Pickle and is investing upwards of $14 million to create a pickleball entertainment complex.

“It’s also got an outside stage for outdoor entertainment, fire pits, two restaurants, one of them will be In the Raw, and another one called In the Kitchen, which is a sports bar, and then we have a medical spa, which I started, another company called Bahama Bucks, snow cones, then outdoor bars as well,” Cuzalina said.

JENKS, OK– Lilly Architects is working on a design for an 11-acre sports entertainment complex planned along the Arkansas River.

The design includes Pickleball courts and restaurant space located east of the new outlet mall being built just south of the Creek Turnpike.

The sports entertainment complex is expected to open late next year.

From the Tulsa World: “We’re full-steam ahead and really excited about it,” said co-owner Angelo Cuzalina. “We think it’s going to be a Gathering Place-type area for Jenks and south Tulsa.”

The complex will start out with 13 pickleball courts, four outdoors and nine indoors, with plans to add eight more indoor courts eventually, he said. “

Lilly Architects is also working on another indoor/outdoor entertainment venue along the river called The Jenks Market.

“The City of Jenks can add one more thing to its economic development resume as it will soon be adding a new food hall and entertainment venue. It will be called Jenks Market, and it will be located next to the Oklahoma Aquarium.

Simon Property Group is slated to open Tulsa Premium Outlets in 2024. In six months, Frisbie Lombardi Real Estate plans to cut the ribbon on Jenks Market. Jenks is clearly seeing an economic boom.

Developers say Jenks Market will be 12,000 square feet to start, with an additional 18,000 square feet, if needed. It will have outdoor seating, and overlook a giant jumbotron for movies and live music.

It’s exciting news for out of towner’s, like Carlos Garcia.

“I think it will help improve people gathering around,” Garcia said.

Bryan Wilks is especially excited. He co-founded The Ten District. It’s a data driven non-profit that recruits businesses to Jenks. Wilks reached out to Lombardi and told them the data overwhelmingly shows that Jenks residents want more family friendly entertainment.

“I think everyone wants the new, while maintaining the sense of a quaint downtown,” Wilks said.

With the traffic downtown Jenks currently bring in, 2 News asked Tony Lombardi – the developer of Jenks Market – how he plans to keep it manageable.

“We’ve had several conversations with the city of Jenks about parking,” Lombardi said. “They have approved additional parking for the area that is now grassed in front of the aquarium.”

Lombardi is also proposing to the city to use a hop on, hop off transportation system. Lombardi says they’d pay for and charge customers a maintenance fee, similar to Circuit, if approved. He says many bigger cities have a similar service.

Wilks encourages residents and visitors to not forget about parking options in back of downtown businesses to help alleviate potential parking issues.”

Tulsa Club Hotel fireplace makes Top 10 list

Posted on: December 19th, 2022 by Chris Lilly No Comments

TULSA, OK– Lilly Architects’ project, The Tulsa Club Hotel, is being recognized for its restored original art deco fireplace. The hotel project was completed in 2019 and showcases the spirit of Bruce Goff’s original Art Deco design. The hotel was once a private club for Tulsa’s elite during Oklahoma’s oil boom of the 1920s.

“Fireplaces have been adding flare — literally and figuratively — to rooms since they first appeared in the castles, taverns and inns during medieval times. And while the fiery features are no longer the only available option when it comes to preparing feasts or keeping spaces warm, many of today’s properties, especially those welcoming guests in winter wonderlands, still employ luminous design details to ignite glowing reviews and make travelers feel more at home. From historic to haute, these hotel hearths light our fire.

#8. The Tulsa Club Hotel: The Sooner State’s second city is a treasure trove of art deco gems including this Bruce Goff-designed high-rise that was reopened part of the Curio Collection by Hilton in 2019. The remodel returned the tower to its former gilded glory with period-appropriate moldings, mirrors, metallic embellishments and by polishing up a spectacular original mosaic fireplace in the King Petite Lounge Suite.”

Lilly Architects designs featured in Conde Nast Traveler Guide

TULSA, OK- Located at the confluence of the Cherokee, Muscogee, and Osage tribal nations, Tulsa was once known as the oil capital of the world. Now, it offers a wonderful mix of both Native American and African American culture and history, plus a blend of Midwestern and Southern charm. Oklahoma’s second-largest city, its former opulence is evident in Art Deco architecture prevalent throughout the downtown area. Also a big music town, with everything from large arenas to small bars hosting regular live music shows, Tulsa saw its Bob Dylan Center open this May in the Tulsa Arts District. The venue showcases thousands of items owned by Dylan (who reportedly appreciates the city for its strong Native American presence), over seven decades—a move that the museum hopes “will help put Tulsa on the map,” according to center director Steven Jenkins.

The Bob Dylan Center, The Church Studio and the Tulsa Club Hotel are all Lilly Architects projects featured in this article.

Olson Kundig partners with Lilly Architects on Bob Dylan Center

Posted on: June 15th, 2022 by Chris Lilly No Comments

TULSA, OK- Lilly Architects partners as local Architect of Record on Bob Dylan center. The firm’s principal, Chris Lilly, is familiar with the property having worked on the Tulsa Paper Company and the adjoining warehouse previously. Lilly, who also designed the Guthrie Green while at another firm has helped to transform most of the Tulsa Arts District into the thriving neighborhood it is today. Projects nearby include the Fox hotel, The Universal Ford Building, the Archer Warehouse and others.

Original Article:

Olson Kundig has announced the opening of its new Bob Dylan Center, a warehouse-turned-museum that gives visitors exclusive access to the cultural treasures found in The Bob Dylan Archive®. Led by design principal Alan Maskin, the center showcases Bob Dylan’s worldwide cultural significance, featuring a collection of more than 100,000 items spanning nearly 60 years of Dylan’s career, from handwritten manuscripts and correspondence, to films, videos, artwork, and original studio recordings.

The design was an international design competition entry 5 years ago, competing with over 100 global firms. Maskin and his design team did not want to create a monument of a Rockstar, instead, they used the artist’s “creative trajectory” as a source of inspiration for visitors, creating the storytelling of his lifelong legacy. Keeping in mind that throughout his career, he has resisted explaining himself truthfully, the design team knew that there will be a play of fiction vs nonfiction. So the design approach took into account this duality, as well as found inspiration from two movies: I’m Not There by Todd Haynes and Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa, in which the latter defined the narrative structure of the center.

The new museum opened its doors to the public on May 10th, 2022, located in Tulsa’s arts district near the city’s renowned Woody Guthrie Center. Originally a former paper warehouse, the 29,000 sq.ft center is a dynamic, multifaceted venue which houses permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibitions of Dylan’s work, his influences, and projects inspired by his legacy. The center will serve as a space to educate, motivate, and inspire visitors through exhibits, public programs, performances, lectures, and publications. While designing the space, the team took into account three visitor experiences: “swimmers, skimmers, and divers” defining the different user profiles visiting the center and how they will interact with the content of the museum.

The Bob Dylan Center featured in Architect’s Newspaper

Posted on: June 7th, 2022 by Chris Lilly No Comments

TULSA, Oklahoma- Lilly Architects’ project, The Bob Dylan Center, is featured in The Architect’s Newspaper after the Grand Opening in May.

The BDC follows the Church Studio and the OKPOP museum to wrap up in 2022. The OKPOP Museum is still not open yet to the public.

Original article:

The man of the hour wasn’t present but some of his biggest admirers turned out this week as the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, welcomed its newest attraction, the $10 million Bob Dylan Center.

Created inside a former paper warehouse, the 29,000-square-foot cultural center is both a museum designed to draw Bob Dylan fans and an archive for scholars studying the 80-year-old singer and writer, who won the 2016 Nobel Prize for literature for creating “new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

It’s the newest addition to Tulsa’s growing Arts District, which also includes the Woody Guthrie Center, Cain’s Ballroom, and The Church Studio, a recording studio once owned by Leon Russell. Tulsa is also home to the Philbrook Museum of Art and the Gilcrease Museum, and the Oklahoma Historical Society is planning the Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture for the Arts District.

Architectural Digest Features 3 Lilly Architects projects

Posted on: June 7th, 2022 by Chris Lilly No Comments

TULSA, Oklahoma- Architectural Digest takes a deep dive into the cultural renaissance happening in Tulsa and across the Midwest. In the article, AD lists seven cultural destinations in Tulsa, three of which are Lilly Architects projects. The OKPOP Museum, Bob Dylan Center, and the newly opened Church Studio.

Original article:

Just one year ago, in the spring of 2021, a broad swath of the national media turned their attention to Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the city commemorated the centennial of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. That recognition of the city’s tragic past was a long time coming and merely the beginning of an ongoing path toward real and lasting reconciliation. Through initiatives like Black Tech Street and Build in Tulsa, the city is welcoming and fostering a new generation of Black entrepreneurs, hoping to recapture the spirit that birthed Black Wall Street over a century ago.

To quell the decades-long flight of creatives and young professionals to other urban centers, the Tulsa Remote project launched in 2018 and has brought well over 1,600 workers to northeast Oklahoma. Their timing was impeccable. If 2021 was a much needed look to a sobering past, 2022 is all about the future and hope. And the catalyst for much of that momentum is the May 10 opening of the Bob Dylan Center (BDC) in Tulsa’s downtown arts district.

Some may find confusing why 80-year-old Dylan chose a city some 860 miles south of his hometown of Duluth, Minnesota, as the location. “There’s more vibrations on the coasts, for sure,” Dylan explained in an interview with Vanity Fair. “But I’m from Minnesota, and I like the casual hum of the heartland.” What’s more, BDC will display items from Dylan’s archive, which was acquired in 2016 by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the University of Tulsa for around $20 million. (The Kaiser foundation later bought out the university’s share.) If nothing else, the space, which was designed by AD100 firm Olson Kundig, will show how a Midwesterner with a guitar criss-crossed the world changing culture with his music. It will show how an outcast went on to win the Nobel Prize in literature. It will show how anything is possible in America.
